More than 80 per cent of West Australian households are concerned about the rising cost of electricity and healthcare, a statewide report by consumer advocacy group Choice has found.Topping the list of economic worries was electricity prices, with 82 per cent of households concerned about rises, closely followed by 81 per cent of households anxious about increasing healthcare costs.

Choice CEO Alan Kirkland said consumers across the country were worried about paying bills in the face of rising prices and energy insecurity.”When surveyed in the week leading up to the state election, Western Australians were feeling pretty pessimistic about the economy,” he said.”Half of those surveyed worried about them or their partner losing a job and 39 percent were planning to cut back spending on essential items.”

Mr Kirkland said consumer worries about healthcare prices were not surprising as private health insurance prices had increased about 55 percent since 2009. WA power prices are budgeted to rise by seven per cent this year but Treasurer Ben Wyatt said last week a higher increase had not been ruled out.

Key economic concerns for West Australians:

* More than a third of residents find it difficult to get by on their current income

* 85 per cent believe their household bills have increased in the last year

* Half of the state are worried about losing their job or their partner losing their job

* More than half are worried about their debt levels

* 48 percent rate the state’s economy as poor, compared to 27 per cent in NSW and 28 per cent in Victoria

* 39 percent are planning to cut back on spending on essential items

* 67 per cent are planning on cutting back on non-essential items.
